What Can You Learn From Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream?

Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream was started in 1978 by childhood friends Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. They started with only $12,000 and now they are selling ice cream all over the world. They are a true American success story.

If you are into business or entrepreneurship, you can learn a lot from Ben and Jerry. They actually give the keys to how you can succeed in your business.

Key#1: In 1977, Ben and Jerry took a $5 course from Penn State to learn how to make ice cream.

Although it was only $5, these two guys understood the importance of learning from others. Surely, they could have learned to make ice cream on their own, but they probably cut their learning curve by 80% after completing the course. A few months later, they started their business and the rest is history.

Key#2: Ben and Jerry gave away free cone samples and promoted movies to draw people to their business.

The two business partners would often host movie festivals by projecting movies on the outside wall of their business. This was an awesome business strategy because people would come watch the free movies and buy ice cream.

They also sponsored days when they would give away free ice cream. After sampling their product, people came back to pay for more.

As an entrepreneur, you have to utilize strategies to bring people to your business. It doesn’t matter if it’s an online or offline business. You can do things like give discounts, incentives, free e-books or newsletters, and any other creative strategy to draw potential customers.

Key#3: Ben and Jerry realized they were in a highly competitive industry, so they carved out their own little niche by introducing unique flavors like Cherry Garcia® ice cream and Peanut Butter Truffle™.

These two friends understood that being different is profitable. When people tasted their awesome flavored ice cream, they became raving fans. If they wanted one of those crazy flavors, the only place they can get them is Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream.

How can you offer something in your business that’s totally unique?

You can create and develop your own products in addition to promoting other people’s products. That’s the obvious answer to set you apart from the rest.

Key #4: They listened to their customers and started selling their flavors by the pint!

Their customers wanted more than just a cone. They wanted a whole pint and Ben and Jerry listened. Because they were responsive to their customer base, they are distributing unique ice cream flavors through supermarkets, grocery stores, convenience stores, franchised Ben & Jerry’s scoop shops, restaurants and other venues.

You can become profitable by listening to your customers, so give them opportunities to make suggestions to improve your business.

These four keys from Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream can explode your business if you develop an action plan to implement these strategies. You’ll definitely see the results in your profits!
